what is vitamin c? the power of antioxidants

Antioxidants – we have heard about them over and over again in the beauty and health industries, but what are they, why are they so important and where can we find them?

We all know that skincare trends come and go, but Vitamin C is here to stay because it has shown time and time again to be effective. (Not to mention that it is one of the most researched skincare ingredients). Vitamin C possesses quite a variety of benefits, ranging from evening out the appearance of overall skin tone to rejuvenating the look of dull skin.

Here’s your ultimate guide to this extraordinary, skin-loving vitamin.

Here, VieDerma takes a deep dive into the ingredient known for its glow-boosting, pigmentation-busting properties, with a little help from our experts.

what is vitamin c?

Vitamin C, or otherwise known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that cannot be stored in the body so humans are required to consume adequate amounts of Vitamin C everyday. This is primarily found in fruits and vegetables – some of the best sources are citrus, peppers, dark leafy greens and strawberries. One serving of any of these foods will meet your daily requirement for the day.  Or, in the case of our skincare, we can use it as a topical treatment to deliver the benefits of this amazing ingredients directly where we want them.

In scientific terms, an antioxidant is a compound which stops the oxidation of another compound. Oxidation is a naturally occurring chemical process that causes the loss of electrons.  A command that has been oxidised is called a free radical; it is very reactive – meaning that it wants to connect to another compound as quickly as possible. Antioxidants can immediately neutralise free radicals, or they can interfere with the free radical’s path of destruction and prevent or reduce the amount of damage.

what are the benefits of vitamin c?

the top 6 benefits of vitamin c

  1. Collagen Production

Vitamin C is essential for producing collagen in the body. Collagen is the building block of skin, hair, muscles and tendons, and it is what keeps our skin looking plump and youthful. Throughout the years, collagen production slows down, which may lead to sagging, dehydrated, dull skin.

As Vitamin C is applied topically, it can help accelerate the production of both collagen and elastin, which help keep the skin plump and firm. It can prevent premature ageing of the skin, restoring a smooth appearance to the skin.

2. Treats Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a common condition characterised by the development of darker spots on the skin – it is often caused by overexposure to the sun’s UV rays and environmental stresses.

A study found that Vitamin C’s antioxidant properties play an important role in combatting unwanted dark spots and preventing signs of ageing caused by sun damage. Vitamin C also inhibits the production of tyrosinase, an enzyme that aids in the production of melanin, preventing hyperpigmentation. Not to mention that with continued topical use, Vitamin C can help prevent dark spots from forming in the first place. What can’t this powerful antioxidant do?

3. Brightens complexion

Whether you are dealing with hyperpigmentation, skin dullness, dark marks or sagging skin, seeking out the best Vitamin C serum is likely important to you. It works to boost circulation, amplify the skin’s complexion and stimulate collagen production.

4. Treats acne & redness

Topical Vitamin C can help with acne through its anti-inflammatory properties that help control sebum production within the skin. In clinical trials, application of Vitamin C twice a day reduced acne lesions when compared to placebo. Such evidence has convinced us and lovers of VieDerma to incorporate this incredible ingredient in our skincare routine!

A lot of us suffer from skin redness & sensitivity; this can result from a number of factors, such as inflammatory skin conditions (e.g. eczema and rosacea), sun exposure, hormones and medical conditions. But you do not need to live with skin redness, thanks to Vitamin C. A significant body of research shows that this powerhouse vitamin minimises redness; it can help mend damaged capillaries that cause skin redness, creating a smoother, more even complexion.

5. Hydrates skin

Without sufficient moisture, the top layer of the skin starts to dry leading to itchy, scaly skin and premature ageing. It is a well-known fact within the skincare world that hydrated, plump skin is vital for keeping your skin healthy and youthful.

Fortunately for us, Vitamin C is clinically proven to help skin retain water, in a similar way to Hyaluronic Acid, keeping the skin smooth and plump, preventing it from becoming too oily or dry.

6. Reduce under-eye circles

Have you ever noticed dark circles under your eyes after a night out or a few days of poor sleep, you are actually seeing a network of blood vessels just under the skin. Vitamin C’s antioxidant properties make skin more elastic and resilient, helping conceal the blood vessels underneath.

how should vitamin c be applied?

The ideal time to use a skincare product containing Vitamin C, such as a serum or moisturiser is in the morning. This is because it can help protect your skin from free radicals and thus applying it in the morning will prevent damage during the day.  It is important to note that Vitamin C does not replace the use of sunscreen or wearing sun-protective clothing. Ensure to use broad-spectrum, sunscreen daily and limit sun exposure during peak hours.

Vitamin C serums should be applied on a clean face, before your moisturiser and sunscreen.

who is vitamin c for?

Some people may experience irritation such as stinging, itching and dryness after using topical Vitamin C. This can be treated by applying a moisturiser over the Vitamin C serum when you use it, in addition to moisturising daily. If you have sensitive skin, you can also start with a lower concentration of Vitamin C to observe how your skin reacts.

No matter what you skin type is, it is always important to test Vitamin C out before making it a part of your skincare regime. At VieDerma, we recommend applying Vitamin C every other day or every few days, and then work your way up in frequency to avoid potential redness and irritation.

That being said, you can never be too careful as all skin types are different and unique, At VieDerma, we understand that everyone has individual goals and desires so book a free, no-obligation consultation with one of our Skin Specialists to learn how you can integrate Vitamin C safely and effectively in your skincare.
