Skinimalism: What Is It?

why you should be simplifying your skincare routine.

Long, elaborate skincare routines have been growing in popularity, with endless skincare products and advice roaming around the internet and social media.

However, sometimes, less can be more. Especially if you pick the correct ingredients and products and stay consistent with your routine. It may also be a good idea if you are a busy workaholic or if it has been hard for you to commit to a skincare routine in the past. Maybe it is time to simplify. You can reduce your skincare routine from 20 steps to 5 basic steps, and chances are that this shorter regime is just as good for your skin.

We were not shocked that a study showed that the average beauty routine now takes approximately 40 minutes, up from 17 minutes in 2006!

Interestingly, there has been increasing hype around minimalist skincare. With so many creams, serums, oils and masks available in the market, it can truly be a challenge to decide on a routine that actually works for your complexion and skin type. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it is very good at taking care of itself. The skin’s natural barrier helps to keep out bad bacteria and other pollutants. When this barrier is damaged, it can lead to dryness, redness, and sensitivity. If you are over-cleansing, over-scrubbing, and using ingredients that are too harsh for your skin, you can disrupt the skin’s barrier. As a result, your skin most likely will retaliate, producing more oil to compensate for the dryness, which leads to blackheads, whiteheads and breakouts.

Therefore, the best way to care for your skin is to keep it clean and hydrated, with an effective routine. It is true that any skin type is vulnerable to the effects that may be caused from using too many skincare products at once. A full skincare routine can and should be simple.

So what should you include in your new, minimalist regime? How much skincare should I use?

A skincare routine is only as effective as the time and effort your put into it. They key is to find a balance that works for you. Listen to your skin and pay attention to how your skin reacts to different products. If something is not working or providing anything for your skin; do not be afraid to adjust your routine accordingly. And always, always, always remember to wear sunscreen!

OVERWASHING

It is without a doubt that washing your face thoroughly and regularly should be a key part of your skincare routine. Too much of a good thing can lead to breakouts when it comes to your skin. Cleansing too often or with harsh ingredients can strip the natural moisture from your skin and dry out your complexion. This can lead to an overproduction of oil and thus blemishes and texture.

maybe skip the toner?

Although most of us do follow the standard skincare routine recommended by ‘experts’ on TikTok: cleanser, toner, treatment and moisturiser, skipping toner may not be a bad thing! As most modern skincare products are pH balanced, the idea that we need toner to remove residue after cleansing can be seen as outdated… But, if you love toner, look for a formula without alcohol so it will not dry out your skin.

overexfoliation

Perhaps one of the most damaging things that you can do to your skin is over exfoliate. Manual or chemical exfoliation removes dead skin cells and dirt, leaving the skin feeling refreshed, glowing and can prevent breakouts. However, you should avoid overdoing this step as best as you can. If you are exfoliating too often or if the active ingredients you are using for chemical exfoliation are too strong, it can lead to redness, irritation, and breakouts. You should aim to stick to once or twice a week and discontinue use of a product if you have a negative reaction.

THE KEY IS CONSISTENCY

Consistency really is one of the most effective ways to see benefits from your skincare routine. If you are relying on a 10-15 step solution for your skin, it is likely that you will not be able to keep it up long enough to actually see results. By scaling down the products you use, you can unlock the power of caring for your complexion with just a few products used every day!

Now that the benefits of simple, effective skincare routines are highlighted, you should try to reduce your skincare routine steps. Start with your favourite cleanser, moisturise, sunscreen and any treatment serums! Over time, you can add or eliminate any other products to suit your skin concerns and desired outcomes!

And remember, less can be more!
